Yesterday, there was a fantastic article about youth giving to help kids in developing countries.http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/07/14/MNON11I593.DTLhttp://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gif
If you like that one, I've got a story that you'll love. PRESCHOOL school kids in Georgia raised funds for the Rainbow School!
My second oldest buddy, Mary Helen, was my back door neighbor growing up. She is a college professor and mom now, in Georgia. Back in the day, we had a lot of hang out time at her house, and she drove me to school when we got to high school. Since she was two years older, had great legs, and did whatever she darned well pleased, she was my personal hero.
Every holiday, when we're all back home, our kids play together in the driveway at her mom's house, still the back door neighbor to my parent's house. While our kids were whacking at a Christmas pinata in the driveway over December, we got to talking about the Rainbow School and she came up with a stellar idea. Now, I'm going to let her tell the rest of the story.
"I am sending our preschool's donation to the Rainbow Primary School. I have to tell you a long story about this sometime -- but the short version is that we had posters, pictures and envelopes collecting money outside every classroom in the school. The kids were bringing in their piggy bank money - not making this up -- seriously, it was very special. I have notes from parents about how glad they were we were doing this.
One night - 90% of our donations were stolen. I was out-of-town and our school director just did not think to collect the envelopes over the weekend. We have a large homeless ministry at our church and the classroom building was open for the weekend for a service for them. My director believes they just took every envelope right down the line on both floors of our school. A few teachers had the envelopes in their rooms. At the end of the year we REcollected -- explaining what had happened!"
Everyone gave again - how AMAZING is this? BIG CHEERS for the little kids and their smart parents - they are the future of philanthropy!
Thank you, MH. This was so far above and beyond all expectations! We are super happy to have your preschoolers involved! (Our buddy Kelly, left, with Mary Helen, right back in high school, GO EAGLES!)
