School is almost over! I have the exams in hand. They are extremely creative, of course. The teachers use visuals, ryhmes, matching, and fill-in-the-blank stories instead of the usual "Write three words that start with A."
Class Four exams cracked me up with the inadvertant references to the American SAT tests with a fill in the opposites section (Telegu vocablulary exam), Happy:____ (and) ____: Night.
On a more lighthearted note, they were required to write a paragraph (grammer and telegu vocabulary exam) on "What is your favorite toy or game?"
General knowledge questions were like "Gandhi's birthday is celebrated in the ____ month," and "Nrimal Town is in the ____ district in Andhra Pradesh."
For math, 4th standard is working on adding hundreds in columns of three, and multiplication of hundreds by single digits (i.e. 425 x 3 = ?), and division of tens by single digits, with no remainders (i.e., 32/8 = ?)
This is Babu Ramu. He is in in the third standard class. They are working on basic literacy skills, like reading simple words and writing simple Telegu letters.
Summer school will be kicked off with a righteous party for the teachers. We're going to Ramoji Film Studios (www.ramojifilmcity.com) to see the Telegu film industry in action. Of course, all of our kids are coming, so this will be a rather tame, kid-friendly righteous party. Then summer school starts on April 26. Dr. Arati will be the special super-guest, teaching the teachers about health, hygiene and nutrition. The kids will have cooking classes for nutrition, "lab" classes to see different things under a microscope for science, literacy training through story writing and play action. The callenge for summer school is to be so good at having fun in school, the kids won't realize they are learning.
The landlady again make noises but seems to have backed down. This time, it was more serious. We've already made offers to pay rent, pay more rent, pay back rent, but her family is set on selling the land. Can we delay her more? Good question.
